Grant Proposal for 3For: Meet with IFA

So yesterday I went in and met Shai Heredia who handles proposals for the Extending Art Practices grant that IFA offers. She was super nice and helpful and here are my notes and understanding from that meeting:

1. The process of submitting a proposal to receiving a grant takes about 3 months. The grant-seeker submits a proposal. If the person handling the division thinks there is some feasibility to this, there will be some re-writing and re-working of the proposal to get it up-to-speed. Once that's done, this is circulated internally within IFA. If approved it is pushed to an external jury. If approved the grant is given.

2. I think Shai is reasonably interested enough to help us get our proposal up-to-speed over the next few weeks.

3. She recommended that we continue working the way we are, and that perhaps 2-3 months down will be a good time to submit the well-honed (by then) proposal to IFA's internal jury.

4. She showed some concern about public scrutiny on this blog at this point tainting the overall personal and candid nature of it. Worried that it might freeze the flow.

5. About the proposal - though she hadn't looked at it in detail - from our discussion she felt that we need to come across more strongly on the 'who' and 'why' aspects. So each artists vision statement seems important. Who each of us are, what experiences we have had so far and how that pushed us towards painting and art.

6. It seems to be important for us to defend our interest in painting as a medium in itself. Why art? Why Painting? What is driving us to create using this form.

7. Why three of us? Also, why is it important for us to share this experience with the public and the art community as such.

8. It would be good to show what are the strong themes that each of us are pushing in our image-making. I guess for pooj its pretty clearly female nudes and landscapes. For me at this point I would say self-portraits and narratives. For nirali would it be nature?

9. Another thing that she suggested is that we actually put in LOTS of images. I suppose our assumption that they will look at the blog is not a good one. The proposal will need to have excerpts (2-3 pages) from the blog (posts and comments) as well as supplemental images that help spin the story more clearly.

10. She thought it would be interesting to put in how this exhibition would be un-curated, or rather organically curated by the project process. What is the potential of the exhibition? And bring out more clearly our idea of sharing with the audience the internal process of art-making.

11. She wondered why we would need funding at this stage. I explained that even a seed grant to get us basic art materials, models etc to work towards this project would be mighty helpful.

Ok so that's what I've got. I have mailed her the proposal in its current form. If you both are ok with it, I will invite her to be a member of the blog (even temporarily) so that she can actually view at her convenience? She is back from some travels 6-7th of March. Her suggestion was that we make the fixes that she has recommended and then get back to her.

thanks arch. lets work towards it. does she want us to keep the public out completely? i could go with that. i suppose we would get influenced to an extent. for now we'll keep it simple..

Hey edited the post and added in a couple more points.

Well its was a concern she had. and something that we have been talking about too. But honestly i dont htink it will hamper us - we're on a roll. and really its just the IFA jury that might need to peek at the blog, if at all.

the way i see it - we wont even really know when and if they do...so shouldn't harm. what say?

k girls - also I have set up a googlegroups account. Its so that we can upload our proposal drafts and other documents. You both are already members and would have received your welcome mails.

1. go to www.googlegroups.com
2. sign in using your email id's
3. 3For will show up as your group
4. click on it to go to our forum
5. you will find a 'upload files' button that you can use to upload your latest edited proposals
6. when u post into this blog, or post in a comment to link do the following:

After uploading the files place your mouse cursor over the filename and right-click and choose Copy Link Location. Then paste it into the code below so it shows up as a link.
Click here to see the code

NOTE: delete 'PASTE LINK LOCATION HERE' and replace it with the location that you have copied ok. The rest of the code (esp the stuff marked in green) stays the same...try it and let me know if you have any probs.

:)

Phew!! Some crazy stuff..its really a process huh...Well, lets just chug on.. I'm not really clear in speaking about my work. I just do what I do..

Yep it is a bit of a process!! But the good news is that I think the proposal in its current form is really not too far off the mark. We will have to just sit down and add in our personal vision statements (a lot of which I think we can get off our first intro posts), with each one defending painting as a medium. Then we could add in a section of 'excerpts' from the blog with pics. I think that would mostly take care of our second draft which we can send over to Shai and see if it reads better. Yeah? Btw we have 10 days to do this...so lets set some deadlines. How about March 3rd for each of us to add in our vision statements?
